Teens come to the rescue of abandoned cat
Cross country team at Marquette University High School praised as Good Samaritans
Last Friday, a group of Marquette University High School Cross Country Team members were out on their usual run when they came upon a helpless kitty.
When is the last time you sat down as a family for a meal? As one of our former Presidents stated: "All great change in America begins at the dinner table". If we are not even sitting down for a meal anymore how can we make any great change or even incremental progress?
I am guilty of this as well...too many quick meals before running the kids off to soccer, dance, baseball, a birthday party etc etc etc. Too much time checking LinkedIn, playing Angry Birds or reading a blog instead of taking time to sit down for dinner or spend time with family.
Winter recreational activities, such as sledding, ice skating, and ice fishing can be very enjoyable and help get rid of cabin fever. Unfortunately many winter activities put us either on, or in close proximity to frozen ponds, lakes, and rivers. Understanding the dynamics of ice can help us avoid a potentially dangerous situation, and may help save the life of a neighbor, friend, or loved one.
Judging the strength of ice from shore simply by appearance is very difficult and is an unreliable way to determine whether it is safe enough to support our weight. The strength of the ice is based on age, thickness, temperature, and whether the ice is covered with snow. Other contributing factors include the depth of water under the ice, size of the body of water, water chemistry and currents, the distribution of the load on the ice, and local climatic conditions.
For a week I have to admit
Each morning I awaken, blink, sit
and sing, “Welcome sweet springtime we greet thee in song”
BUT wait, no, we haven’t had winter yet, I guess I’m wrong
BUT, BUT, it’s February
What about December? Collards still edible,
Broccoli and lettuce, felt incredible
January? oh gawd, January thaw
Maybe nature changed her law
Spring does start, in March, as I remember
Should never never begin in November
BUT BUT BUT I know
we’re gonna have ice, gonna have snow
temp surely will drop to sub-zero
down down down to thirty below
OK, I heard, winter starts tomorrow
will last two days, then spring for a day, winter for three,
then spring back, to tease me
All this is just
Gaia telling us
Global warming does exist, does exist
Earth’s not simply sunkissed
We’re gonna be sunburned
Put in the oven, cooked to a turn
Extreme is the beam that crisps our skin
Extreme is the beam that’s doing us in
Extreme ice, shakes, quakes, flood
Tsunamis, hurricanes, sliding mud
Our climate’s under a magnifier
Sometimes wetter, sometimes dryer
Records set for droughts, forest fires,
So why are there more and more climate deniers?
Gaia’s fracking angry, frack frack frack
It’s we who should shake as Gaia pays us back
Frack frack frack pays us back BUT why?
It’s because we gobble too much of the pie,
It’s because we gobble too much of the pie,
Looking outside at the blowing snow it looks like Old Man Winter is making sure we don't get too cocky about an easy Winter. However, last night I got a huge taste of Spring Fever when I attended a manager's meeting for the Glendale Little League. I could almost smell springtime as we discussed upcoming tryouts, practice schedules and various groundrules.
Last year I helped coach my son's Little League team for the first time and what a wonderful experience. The most fulfulling part was watching the new players grow and develop throughout the year. Seeing kid's faces beam with pride when they caught a ball or connected at the plate was worth all of the time and effort spent on the practice field. Of course there were also disappointments but our players learned to handle them with class and good sportsmanship.
Valentine's Day should be a day for love and romance. But unfortunately, every year the Wisconsin BBB hears about scam artists trying to take advantage of Valentine's Day with some very unromantic intentions. Here are some of the scams you should be on the lookout for:
If you’ve ordered flowers….
One phishing scheme involves an e-mail that indicates the flowers you ordered for your sweetie won't be delivered unless you log in and re-enter your credit-card information. The scam e-mail is sent to a mass number of recipients; chances are a few of them had ordered flowers. If you click on the link and enter your credit-card number, you'll wind up with a hefty credit card statement. If you see a message like this, go directly to the florist's Web site or call the business.
DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17

Often we have quality and kindness in our midst and we don't stop to recognize it. We are quick to contact a company about poor service and do not in turn compliment so that good service can be acknowledged.
My kids had a late start day today and so were playing outside with the neighbor. Tuesday is our garbage pick-up and recycling day and the little vehicles were buzzing back and forth along our street. One of the workers paused briefly to throw a football to my son, completing a "fly" pattern for a certain touchdown. Such a small gesture that my son told me was "really fun" when he came inside.
The deadline is quickly approaching to apply for the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin Foundation’s Student of Integrity scholarships.
This is the third year that the BBB of Wisconsin Foundation has offered financial scholarships to Wisconsin high school students who have demonstrated character, leadership and ethical values; providing the opportunity to continue their education beyond high school at an accredited college or training program.
