Shorewood Connects announces another senior project, “Cuppa Joe” at Einstein's Bagels 4301 N Oakland, on Tuesday Mornings beginning May 4th, from 10 to 11:30 am.
Wine & Dine Experience at Coquette Cafe in Milwaukee
A festive Wine & Dine event in Milwaukee was held on Wednesday April 28th, 2010 at the Coquette Cafe at 5:30PM. This was the first event in a monthly series organized by Becky Steimle and David Wise of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Admission to the event was only by reservation, and attendance was limited to 50 guests. It turned out to be a sold-out event, with the proceeds going to the Feeding America program. Other Milwaukee restaurants will be hosting future events.
This first event was hosted by Chefs Chris Hatleli and Nick Burki of Coquette Cafe along with me. As a culinary consultant and an Indian cookbook author, I already had the pleasure of working with Chris and Nick when they were the chefs at the Milwaukee Art Museum's Calatrava cafe. Our collaboration has always been a rewarding experience for me, and I believe it was a rewarding experience for them as well.
First Communion 2010
Our family had a great weekend as we celebrated our son's First Communion. The weather was perfect for our families from Ohio, who are well on their way to hot and humid summer days and mass was perfect for all second graders and adults too.
YOU'VE GOT TO BE TAUGHT TO HATE
Kids love dandelions. When the flowers bloom they gather bouquets, and later on in the season they blow feathery spores and watch them float away. Fifty years ago no one questioned this. Things have changed, not for kids, they still love their bouquets, but for adults, some adults. I heard one recently rave, “I hate dandelions, I hate dandelions, I HATE dandelions!”
After World War II corporations wanted to find a new use for the chemical weapons they had developed and decided dandelions were excellent enemies. So these entities called corporations taught everyone who would watch their ads that enemies, called dandyLIONS, CRAB grass and QUACK grass, LAMBS quarter, creepy Charlie, purple clover, lurked on their lawns. They didn't mention that clover hosts bacteria that take free nitrogen from the air and make it available to plants. And they didn't mention that weapons of war, even weapons of a war on weeds, cause collateral damage.
Sending a party invitation
As my bio states, I own a personalized stationery business called Paper Celebration. I sell personalized invitations for all occasions. Next week I am travelling to New York for the National Stationery Show at the Javits Center. The show is amazing and attracts stationery designers from all over the country. I love going to see all of the new items and ideas. This will be my 5th or 6th show and I think this show will be very different from previous years. The economy definitely affected the party and stationery industry - if you were looking to cut back that was an easy place to start. Technology has also taken a bite out of the business. Evites are easy to send and economical. The economy and technology have forced the industry to analyze the trends and work hard to create new items that will encourage consumers to spend and encourage consumers to entertain again.
COLLATERAL DAMAGE
After a dinner that included puns, poems, and good food, five of us settled into the car for the ride back to Shorewood. Gloria couldn’t find her seat belt, and our designated driver said, “Don’t worry about it. I’ll drive carefully.”
“Didn’t you drive carefully coming here, even though everyone was belted?”
“Yes, but I’ll drive extra slowly now.”
“Oh, if I’d known I could get you to drive slowly, I’d have made sure you knew that Adolph wasn’t actually wearing his belt.”

TIME IS AN ILLUSION. But coffee and bagels at Einstein's are real.
