Buy pink? Not so fast!

Better_Business_Bureau, BBB, Breast_Cancer_Awareness_Month, pink_products, charity

by Susan Bach, Director of Communications, Wisconsin BBB

If you’re like me, you’ve been watching a lot of football lately and have noticed all of the pink gloves, cleats and other accessories that NFL players have been wearing in October to help promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s hard NOT to notice when a 300-pound football player is wearing hot pink shoes! I applaud the NFL, and hope it makes a lot of money when it auctions off those items – since I know that all of the proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

HOW DO YOU COUNT STORIES WHEN YOU’RE AT THE BOTTOM?

21st century life, corporations, events, politics

Black suits, black portfolios in hand (how much is your portfolio worth, sir?), neatly knotted ties, they walk (very erect) into a black building forty or fifty stories tall (how do you count stories when you’re at the bottom?).

And across from those forty or fifty stories, are the real stories, not the confabulations, the stories of the humans, not of the corps, the stories of the thousands who struggle, some of whom starve while the forty of fifty stories stock up on stock, rake in assets as they set on their asses. If the 99% turn into corpses, and the 1% survive, what stories would the corporations have to tell, to what customers would the corporations sell?

I'VE LONG LONGED FOR SHORTER SHORTS

creativity, events, open mic, film, MARN

The play‘s the thing. We see where life leads and run with it, see where our onion lands and play along. As in PLEASE PLAY. That’s a short short, filmed and edited by Kathy Fischer, which features 7 or 8 Rosenblatts (Adolph has genie rather than genius status), Genevieve Leplae, John Gourdoux, Artasia, Rosenblatt Gallery, sculptures, buddhas, Japanese bath tubs, and a red onion.

You can see it this Thursday, Oct 20, 7 PM, at the Times Cinema, along with my short short DANCERS and other short shorts by local filmmakers. I made DANCERS several years ago, well before digital, high def, whatever else is current. I chose dozens of my dancer drawings and paintings, assigned each a number, listed them in the order I wanted them filmed, and added the number of frames for each artwork. Weeks later, film scraps on the editing room floor, I was ready to add Sigmund Snopek’s music.

Halloween on the Cheap

Halloween, costumes, mummy, pirate, scarecrow, online_shopping, Better_Business_Bureau, BBB

By Sheila Julson
Wisconsin Better Business Bureau

Whether it’s a last-minute invite to a Halloween party, or just procrastination, coming up with a quick and reasonably-priced Halloween costume can leave one in horror. Come late October, a trip to the store will often lead to all the good costumes being picked over, leaving one with a choice of parading around as last year’s Hollywood blockbuster character, or cobbling together mismatched costume pieces discarded on the shelves.  Even the fun props and fake blood have been snapped up.
