Dogs Have Owners but Cats Have Staff SUPPOSE WE METAMORPHOSEWhen we moved to a dot on the map in 1966, what was I hoping to find? Probably a city of artists and activists. And more and more over the years, that’s what Milwaukee has become. For the past few months these artists and activists have been working together to create the Third Annual All-City People’s Parade, a dream parade. It’s our dream of metamorphosis from the present rancorous and roiling world to a happier, more habitable, more charitable planet. The grubby grub becomes a butterfly. But can the hard-working, community-oriented ants repel the greedy grasshoppers? Will the grains of respect for ourselves and each other increase their flow in the hourglass of time? These are children who enter school with learning and health issues that have a lasting, negative effect on their ability to learn and succeed. One notable example is among children with autism, who are often not diagnosed until school, and lose four years of early optimal treatment. Donors: Be Careful in Wake of 9/11 AnniversarySunday’s anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks is sure to evoke memories, emotion and, for some, philanthropy. The BBB wants to remind people that scammers may take advantage of the anniversary, and that donors should carefully research a charity before they give. A recent Associated Press investigation found that many 9/11 charities “failed miserably” in serving victims, their families and their memories, yet continue to collect donations. This past week, the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs warned that a scammer was calling residents in Northeast Wisconsin fraudulently soliciting donations for a veterans’ clinic in Green Bay. I knew a lot of visual artists, only two or three writers. I felt as if I was writing in a vacuum. Since then I’ve discovered that our niche in the Midwest is alive with talented people, writers, artists, musicians, actors, dancers. And I’ve had the opportunity to work with and perform with many of them! Don Natzke Receives National Award for His Advocacy of Individuals with DisabilitiesThe Easter Seals’ National Board of Directors has recently announced the award winner for the 2011 Outstanding Advocate Award for Local Government, Milwaukee County’s Office of Persons with Disabilities Executive Director, Don Natzke. Each year the Easter Seals’ National Board of Directors awards an elected or appointed federal, state or municipal official the Outstanding Advocate Award. The award may be given to recognize an ongoing commitment to issues affecting people with disabilities or for one specifically noteworthy accomplishment.
Together Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin and Marquette High are Tackling AutismJoin Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin and Marquette University High School on Oct. 9 for a free football clinic for children with autism and their siblings. The day of football fun is an opportunity to integrate individuals affected by autism into the community. The inclusion of the individuals and their families will raise awareness for Easter Seals’ autism services. Children with autism, ages 3-18 and their siblings are encouraged to attend. The clinic will be held at Marquette University High School’s football field from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 9. The clinic will include basic football drills such as throwing and catching, trying on the team’s uniforms, and relay races. Staff members of Easter Seals’ autism department will also be available for training and additional support. Don Natzke has a long-standing commitment to the disability community and the Easter Seals of Southeastern Wisconsin. He is being recognized for his role in the process to privatize the programming of Wil-O-Way, a recreational facility for adults with disabilities. Don chose Easter Seals as the recreation provider creating a partnership with the Milwaukee County Office for Persons with Disabilities which is responsible for the success that Wil-O-Way has become today. “Don is a visionary. He is passionate and always finds a way to get things done regardless of red tape or budget difficulties,” says Bob Glowacki, Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin CEO, “Don is very deserving of this prestigious national recognition. He is continuously advocating for the rights and opportunities for individuals with disabilities and finding ways to make them happen.”
