Public Dedication Ceremony on September 21 To Include Visit by Artist
A public sculpture by the internationally known Spanish artist Jaume Plensa will be dedicated at Atwater Park (at the intersection of Capitol Dr. and Lake Dr.), in Shorewood, Wis. on Tuesday, September 21 as part of the Village’s new public art initiative. The dedication ceremony for “Spillover II” will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. when the public is invited to attend “Plensa in the Park,” a celebration that will include food, drinks and comments by the artist.
Shorewood’s new major art acquisition is an 8-1/2 ft. crouching human form with rounded contours that sits on a two-feet-high concrete pedestal. The letters that form the open framework suggest that language is our primary tool for experiencing the world and each other, and that we are, essentially, both limited and empowered by this abstract means of translating our experiences. “Spillover II” will be lit from within and will glow at night, acting as a subtle beacon for the park and providing a focal point at the end of the Village’s busiest street.
Plensa’s work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan. In the Midwest, his most famous and recognizable work, The Crown Fountain, is in Chicago’s Millennium Park. This work consists of a black granite reflecting pool placed between a pair of 50-ft., glass-block towers. Digital video images/faces of a broad social spectrum of Chicago citizens are projected on the towers, with water flowing through an outlet in the center of the screen, giving the illusion of water spouting from the mouths of the faces.
Shorewood’s Plensa sculpture is the first work of art in a comprehensive, though still developing, plan initiated by the Shorewood Public Art Committee, formed in 2001. “Spillover II” was made possible by a generous gift from an anonymous donor. Additional sponsorships include the Shorewood Foundation, the Shorewood Men’s Club, the Village of Shorewood Marketing Program and the Village of Shorewood. Sponsors of the dedication event on September 21 are Coalesse and Bentley Prince Street.
The “Plensa in the Park” dedication on Tuesday, September 21 will feature a personal visit from the artist. The public is invited to attend from 6-8 p.m. Spread out a blanket or grab a picnic bench and enjoy the festivities on the night of the Equinox. Beverages and a limited menu will be sold at the event by Hubbard Park Lodge. For more information, please contact Dick Eschner, Public Art Committee Chair, at 414.964.4504 or rceschner@sbcglobal.net
A post-party fundraiser to benefit Public Art Shorewood will be held after the dedication from 7:30-9 p.m. at the home of James and Vida Langenkamp in Shorewood. Refreshments will be catered by Hubbard Park Lodge and music will be provided by Shorewood High School student musicians. Attendance is limited to 150 people and the cost is $50 per person. To request an invitation, contact Pat Algiers at algiers@sbcglobal.net or 414.963.1613.
Bid on your favorite bench to benefit the Shorewood Foundation!
The Village of Shorewood has been decorated all summer long with 41 beautiful, custom-created benches, part of the “Best Seats in the House” public art event that closed on August 15. Shorewood’s benches have been the talk of the town this season and now they will be placed in a public auction on Sunday, August 29 at Hubbard Park Lodge (3565 N. Morris Blvd). The public is invited to attend the auction from 4:30-7:30 p.m. where they can meet the artists, enjoy complimentary appetizers and a cash bar. Admission is $10 per person. Forty of the benches will be auctioned off to the highest bidders to benefit the Shorewood Foundation. The bench formerly on display at the Shorewood Police Department, sponsored by the Shorewood Foundation Board of Directors, will be held back and auctioned off at the Shorewood Foundation annual dinner/auction on Saturday, November 6.
The bidding process has already begun at www.shorewoodwi.com – just click on the home page photo and you will go right to the bidding page. Submit your bid online and someone will get back to you right away. Bids on the benches will start at $300 and we anticipate a lively auction event as each and every bench is a masterpiece - and will look great on a patio or porch, in the garden, in a playroom, or just about anywhere! The benches have been clear-coated by an auto body shop so they will last a very long time.
Fans of “Best Seats in the House” can also commemorate the event by purchasing notecards featuring color photographs of each of the benches. The notecards are packaged in four groups of 10 cards each and can be purchased for $12 per pack (including envelopes) or save $8 and buy all 4 packs for only $40. Visit the Village Hall Customer Service Desk on Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. – hurry, cards are available in limited quantities. Any remaining notecards will be sold at the auction on Sunday.
“Best Seats in the House” was produced by the Shorewood Business Improvement District and the Shorewood Foundation was the presenting sponsor. Other sponsors include the Village of Shorewood Marketing Program, the Shorewood DPW, the Shorewood Men’s Club and Gloss Photography Studios.

Grab a seat. . .you have 41 to choose from in Shorewood’s newest public art project, “Best Seats in the House.” This exciting event, following in the footsteps of last year’s successful “Butterflies in Flight,” will engage the entire community this summer. Beautifully decorated cedar benches, featuring the talents of local artists, will be on display throughout the Shorewood Business District along Oakland Ave. and Capitol Dr., and other landmark Shorewood locations including the library, Village Hall, Shorewood Police Department, Shorewood Fitness Center and Shorewood Post Office. Meet and greet the artists from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, June 5 at designated bench locations, when they will talk about their work and answer questions.
According to Barb Caprile, marketing director for the Shorewood Business Improvement District which is producing the event, “Public art projects enrich communities culturally and create a synergy among residents, community groups, businesses and artists. Shorewood’s 2010 project will showcase Shorewood’s shops, restaurants and beautiful business district and Village by attracting new visitors/customers to the area throughout the summer months.”
Many of the artists featured in this year’s event live in Shorewood, including Melinda Fishman, Donna Burdge, Don Berg, Amy Thomas, Leann Wooten, Dave and Mary Jo Thome, Jenny Steinman Heyden, Bruce Seeds, Cindy Shuelke and numerous students from both Atwater School and the Shorewood Intermediate School. The benches have been creatively decorated using paint, mosaic, ironwork and mixed media. Brochures listing each bench location and artist are available at each sponsoring business and Village Hall, or by visiting www.shorewoodwi.com.
The Shorewood Foundation is the major underwriting sponsor of “Best Seats in the House.” The event will be on display from June 5-August 15 and a public auction will be held on Sunday, August 29 when the benches will be sold to benefit the Shorewood Foundation. Seeking Milwaukee Area Artists To Participate in Annual Public Art Event - Business Sponsors Also Solicited
The Shorewood Business Improvement District is pleased to announce its public art event for summer 2010 - and invites area artists to apply to participate. The theme for this year's event revolves around a custom-made bench. Artists whose proposals are selected will be paired with a Village business or organization to be their sponsor. Each decorated bench will reside outside a storefront on public display in Shorewood's business district through the duration of the event (June 5-August 15). A public auction will be held at the end of August, when the benches will be auctioned off to benefit the Shorewood Foundation, the event's presenting sponsor. "Best Seats in the House" is being produced by the Shorewood Business Improvement District (BID).
Cash prizes will be awarded for the best five designs ($400 first place, $300 second place, $200 third place and two $100 honorable mentions). Each artist will receive a $100 stipend to cover the costs of supplies.
Postmark deadline for proposals is Friday, March 12. There is no fee to submit a design, and more than one entry can be submitted. Applications will be juried the week of March 15 with notification by March 19. Artists will need to pick up their bench on Saturday, March 27 in Shorewood. Artists will be given approximately 7 weeks to complete their work before a deadline of May 14 to return the decorated bench. Any media can be used to decorate and embellish the bench, including paint, mosaic and mixed media. The more unique and imaginative, the better!
After Shorewood's very successful "Butterflies in Flight" public art exhibition last summer, this year's "Best Seats in the House" promises to be an even bigger and better event. Let your creativity run wild by custom-decorating one of our handsome benches (size: 48 inches long x 36 inches high x 22 inches wide, weighing approximately 35 pounds). Enjoy the public display of your bench for over 2 months, including a plaque with your name on it. Your name will also be listed in an event brochure and on the Shorewood Business Improvement District website and other marketing materials.
SPECIAL NOTE: Seeking business sponsors for this event! As a sponsor of the event, your name will be prominently displayed on a plaque mounted to the bench, which will be displayed in front of your store or business from June 5 to August 15. Your name will be included on the Shorewood BID website, in the event brochure, posters and other marketing materials. But most importantly, your business will be a DESTINATION this summer with a bench on display for 2+ months to attract new customers/visitors to your location. The cost for a business sponsorship is only $295.
"Best Seats in the House" will engage Shorewood's attractive, walkable community this summer in a celebration of discovery as residents and guests stroll the business district to discover our fabulous benches! For more information and to request an artist or sponsor application, please e-mail barb@shorewoodwi.com or visit www.shorewoodwi.com.

Hubbard Park Lodge, Shorewood’s much-loved treasure and historic landmark, has a new proprietor. Milwaukee restaurateur Russ Davis has signed a 10-year lease with the Village to operate the Lodge and the nearby Shorewood River Club. Davis brings extensive expertise to the venture with his experience as owner of the Vecchio Entertainment Group, which includes Lakefront Palm Garden (inside the Lakefront Brewery on Commerce St.), Rio West Cantina (on Humboldt Ave. in the Riverwest neighborhood), and The Red Accordion (in downtown Milwaukee).
Davis, a Shorewood resident, has some exciting plans for the Lodge. He says his goal is to attract families on a more regular basis. On his agenda is a Sunday morning family-friendly, lumberjack breakfast with pancakes and an omelet bar. Friday nights will bring the fun, quality and affordability of Captain Rusty’s popular fish fries along with The Brewhaus Polka Kings, already famous at the Lakefront Palm Garden.
Davis is looking forward to the new restaurant. “My wife and I are thrilled to take over operations at Hubbard Park Lodge. This historic building is an absolute gem and we are honored to begin a new era of restaurant operations that we hope will please our neighbors. Bringing the community together for good food and exceptional service in a family-friendly atmosphere are our primary goals,” he says.
The Lodge will keep its tradition of being open to the public on weekends and closed for private affairs during the week – plus the special buffet on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Easter. And as always, it will remain a beautiful setting for Saturday afternoon and evening weddings.
Hubbard Park celebrated 71 years last fall – it is one of 13 identical structures built across the U.S. as a Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) Project initiated by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration during the Great Depression. Our Hubbard Park Lodge is one of only two of the original buildings left standing (the other is just outside Washington, D.C.).
Hubbard Park Lodge is located at 3565 N. Morris Blvd. in Shorewood. The Lodge can be reached at 414.332.4207. The Lodge introduces its new family-friendly, Friday night Polka Fish Fry on January 22 from 5-9 p.m.

• Shorewood Department of Public Works: The hard work and commitment by Shorewood's DPW staff makes our Village cleaner, our parks and medians prettier, and life in our Village healthier and easier. They provide the highest level of public service possible to Shorewood residents by keeping all Village property, the infrastructure and vehicles properly maintained.
FACADE IMPROVEMENT OF THE YEAR
• Demetrios Dimitropoulos and 3510 Oakland LLC: The newly renovated building at 3510 N. Oakland Ave. at Shorewood's southern border provides a handsome and refreshing entryway to the Village. With its new facelift, partly funded by a Village/BID facade improvement grant, the 3510 N. Oakland building demonstrates a significant investment in the business district by property owner Demetri Dimitropoulos.

New Fixtures Compliments of Shorewood Foundation, Village of Shorewood, CDA and BID
Shorewood’s business district along Oakland Avenue is brightly lit this season thanks to new lighting fixtures recently installed by the Department of Public Works. Attractive new light fixtures that include two different variations of brightly lit snowflakes were made possible by the generosity of the Shorewood Foundation and the Village of Shorewood/CDA, which paid for the majority of the costs. The Shorewood Business Improvement District also was an underwriting sponsor.
Since 1964, the Shorewood Foundation has provided funding for a variety of community activities, programs and special events that enhance the quality of life in our Village. The organization supports the community by collecting private donations that are then combined into larger grants for community use. Their altruistic work in the Village is invaluable to life in Shorewood, and we are deeply grateful for all they do!
We are extremely grateful to the Shorewood Foundation and the Village/CDA for allocating funds to the new seasonal lighting. In-depth research helped select a quality vendor who is well-known for working with other BIDs in the state. Plus, the fixtures are fitted with LED lights to conserve energy. Many thanks to the Shorewood DPW for also custom fitting the brackets to Shorewood’s new lamp posts to accommodate the new light fixtures.
Residents, businesses and visitors can enjoy the new lighting through the next few winter months! Look for additional units to be installed along the Capitol Drive corridor when the street is renovated in 2010.
