Things to Do

Fire departments square off in combat challenge

Glendale - The North Shore Fire Department Explorer Post 215 along with the North Shore Fire Department will host the second annual Fire Department Explorer Post Combat Challenge from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 17 at the North Shore Fire Department's Station No. 2, 5901 N. Milwaukee River Parkway, Glendale.

This year, about 40 young adults ages 14 to 21 will be competing. These young competitors come from several different fire departments including, North Shore, Cedarburg, Milwaukee, Grafton, Lyons, Menomonee Falls and Oak Creek.

The challenge consists of simulated firefighting events including a stair climb while carrying hose, pulling hose up to a third story window from the exterior, simulating forced entry to a structure, advancing a hose line on level ground and rescuing a victim from a fire.

The community is encouraged to come out and cheer on these local young adults

Big band salute last of summer concerts

Shorewood - The Shorewood Concert Band will present the last in a series of free concerts at Atwater Park, located at Capitol and Lake drives, at 7 p.m. July 15.

'Traveling Light' presented at Crossroads

Mequon - Crossroads Presbyterian Church, 6031 W. Chapel Hill Road, will host actor Alan Atwood as he presents "Traveling Light," a contemporary retelling of the Gospel of Mark.

Free performances will take place during worship services at 7 p.m. July 15 and 9:30 a.m. July 18.

Golf Classic presented by chamber

Mequon - The Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce's 17th annual golf classic will be July 16 at Mee-Kwon Park Golf Course, 6333 W. Bonniwell Road.

Registration, networking and lunch are at 12:30 p.m. The shotgun start is at 2 p.m.

The cost is $75 per golfer and the fee includes 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch, beverage tickets, BBQ dinner buffet and cash bar.

Sidewalk sale brings deals, wagon wheels

Whitefish Bay - Red Wagon Days is coming July 16-17 to Silver Spring Drive. Red Wagon Days will feature a wagon silent auction, sales, donations to Goodwill Industries, a children's wagon-decorating contest and live entertainment.

Twelve decorated and filled Radio Flyer wagons will be on display throughout the Whitefish Bay business district beginning July 9.

Specific shopping hours will vary by business but all shops will be open both days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Plenty of things to do at Weyenberg Library in July

Mequon - Here are some of the activities scheduled for July at the Weyenberg Library, 11345 N. Cedarburg Road.

• The movie, "Hachi: A Dog's Tale," will be shown at 1 p.m. July 16.

• Discovery World: It's Electric, a program for teens, is set for 2 p.m. July 20.

• The Schlitz Audubon Nature Center's Sky Hunters: Birds of Prey at 2 p.m. July 28.

• "Year One," a movie for teens, is set for 3:30 p.m. July 22 in the Tolzman Community Room.

• "The Book of Eli," a movie for adults, is set for 1 p.m. in the Tolzman Community Room.

• Songs and Stories with Stuart Stotts, a program for children, will take place at 3 p.m. July 29.

• In the Gallery, picturing America displays high quality reproduction of some of the most significant works of art if American History, now being displayed.

Men's club hosting blood drive Saturday

Family programs bring fun for the whole family

Glendale - Family programs begin at North Shore Library, 6800 N. Port Washington Road, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoons, as follows:

• July 20, John Peine is back this year with a Lego building program.

• July 27, Schiltz Audubon Center's Screech Owl at Midnight Hollow.

The family fun continues on Thursday nights at 7 p.m. on the following days:

• July 15, Bassmeister will be fishing for laughs.

• July 29, Stuart Stotts brings live music and fun.

Registration is not required for family programs.

Terrific Tuesdays kick-off children's library program

Pair lecture on women in politics

Mequon - Lara Wessel and Elizabeth Janairo will discuss the current pressures and growing potential for American women interested in pursuing political power at a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. The program will be at the Ozaukee Country Club, 10823 N. River Road.

The cost is $17.

Glendale - The Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center is offering a variety of family-oriented programs at the Bayshore Town Square, 5800 North Bayshore Drive:

• In-Fuse workout in the Town Square from 8 to 9 a.m. through Aug. 22.

• Angie Gehred and Toddlin Tykes from 11:30 to 1 p.m. July 21 for ages 4 and younger.

• Sing-a-longs in the Town Square at 1 p.m. Aug. 6.

• JCC Mini Maccabi Games from 11:30 to 1 p.m. Aug. 18 for ages 3-7.

• JCC End of Summer Carnival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 25 for all ages.

Music in the Glen continues with concerts

Glendale - The city presents its free Music in the Glen concerts and the celebration of its 60th anniversary with all outdoor concerts being held at the Bavarian Inn's old Heidelberg Park, 700 W. Lexington Blvd. The Music in the Glen presents:

• Bobby Way and The Wayouts at 7 p.m. July 21 with a variety of popular music from Sinatra to Prince.

• Steve Lewandowski Trio at 7 p.m. July 28 with jazz from the great American songbook.

• The George Busateri Group at 7 p.m. Aug. 4 with the celebration of Glendale's 60th anniversary and dancing to music from Sinatra to Santana.

• Andrew Neesley and Philip Dizack at 7 p.m. Aug. 11 with original and contemporary jazz.

Volunteers needed to maintain nature preserves

Mequon - The Ozaukee Washington Land Trust is again looking for volunteers to maintain the nature preserves and to help at the annual fundraising dinner at the following locations:

• Mequon Nature Preserve, 8200 County Line Road, from 9 to noon July 22 and 24 for cattail removal. The meeting location is PieperPower education Center.

• Home on the Range, formerly the steak and fish broil, from 9 to noon and 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 15.

Streetlife to entertain at Hubbard Park free concert

Shorewood - There will be a free community concert at Hubbard Park featuring Streetlife with Warren Wiegratz at 6:30 p.m. July 22. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and make a night of it. Picnic food and assorted beverages, including beer and wine, will be for sale from Hubbard Park Lodge, 3565 North Morris Blvd. (Please, no carry-in alcohol; make your purchase in the park.)

Bereavement group meets at Jewish Community Center

Whitefish Bay - A bereavement group for people who have experienced a loss in their family or personal life will meet at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, 6255N. Santa Monica Blvd., Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Sept. 1. There will be no meeting July 21.

The group is free.

Community band begins concert series

Whitefish Bay - The Whitefish Bay Community Band will perform concerts at Old Schoolhouse Park, North Marlborough Drive, across from the Whitefish Bay public library at 7 p.m. Wednesday and at 3 p.m. Aug. 1 and 8.

The concerts will include patriotic and military songs, marches, show tunes, polkas and old standards. Some of this year's concerts will be dedicated to the memory of Carol O'Brien, who died in May, and Wayne Becker who died in October. Carol conducted the band for the past 12 years. Wayne was a substitute conductor, musical arranger and cornetist with the band for several years.

Brown Deer Library presents Terrific Tuesdays

Brown Deer - The Brown Deer Library, 5600 W. Bradley Road, has an assortment of fun events coming up this summer. All programs begin at 7 p.m. on the following dates:

• July 27, Jump, Giggle, Mime and Wiggle, Nancy Weiss-McQuide. Jump, Giggle, Mime, and Wiggle is a lively series of stories for children ages 4-10. Acting, mime, juggling and dancing are utilized to enact stories that portray friendship, equality and pure fun.

• Aug. 10, Hunting with Henry the Heron, Nature in the Parks. Based on the book "Henry the Impatient Heron" by Donna Love, children will discover the importance of being patient while putting on a show and learning about life in a wetland. Participants will explore the theater process and work behind the scenes. Following the puppet show, there will be a variety of activities to allow children to think, grow, eat, walk, stalk and squawk like a great blue heron.

Resident gardeners show off their work

Shorewood - The Shorewood gardens tour will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 31. Tour 10 Shorewood gardens and enjoy the creative work of resident gardeners who will be showing off imaginative use of color, unusual features and great variety in the use of perennials and annuals.

Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased in advance at Village Hall, 3930 N. Murray Ave., the Department of Public Works, 3801 N. Morris Blvd., or the Garden Room, 2107 E. Capitol Drive. Tickets will also be sold on the day of the event at individual garden locations.

Israeli Scouts give free concert

Glendale - A group of Israeli Scouts, the Israel Scouts Friendship Caravan Te'ena, will give a free outdoor concert at Bayshore Town Center, 5800 N. Bayshore Drive, at 7 p.m. Aug. 4.

The concert will include singing, dancing and storytelling. The Scouts are a troupe of Israeli teens.

In case of rain, the concert will be held in the mall rotunda.

Archdiocese to host Theology on Tap

Mequon - The Archdiocese of Milwaukee will host Theology on Tap for the 10th consecutive summer. The program is a speaker series designed to address interests of young adults in their 20s and 30s.

The program will run at 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Aug. 4, at Alpine Village Restaurant, 10401 N. Cedarburg Road. The series is free and open to the public.

Woof 'n Hoof raises awareness about cancer

Shorewood - The Gilda's Club of Southeastern Wisconsin Woof 'n Hoof fundraiser will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 7 featuring a 1- or 2.5-mile dog and people walk beginning at Atwater Elementary School, 2100 E. Capitol Drive, and stroll through the neighborhood with a stop at Gilda's Clubhouse for tours.

Sheriff David A. Clarke, Jr. the official Leader of the Pack, along with his canine police service dogs will certainly get walkers and hoofers off to a good start. This year will feature a Bow-wow Bazaar and a Celebrity Hoofers Meet 'n Greet.

Training session to advocate for Israel

Glendale - The Congregation Anshe Sfard Kehillat Torah, 6717 N. Green Bay Road, will hold a session from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 8. Learn how to find and present the facts about the conflict in the Middle East, how to answer criticisms, dispel misconceptions, acquire practical advocacy methods and become an informed, articulate advocate for Israel.

Rotary hosts Lobster Fest fundraiser Aug. 28

Thiensville - The Mequon-Thiensville Sunrise Rotary Club will hold Lobster Fest at Shully's Cuisine, 146 N. Green Bay Road, starting at 5:30, Aug. 28. This event will be a fundraiser for the Rotary Club that will help improve the quality of life here and elsewhere in the world by assisting community services with financial and volunteer support.

Tickets are $60 each and are available for advance purchase at mtsunriserotary.org or at a local Harris Bank, Sommer's Automotive, or from any member of the club. Only 300 tickets are available this year, and ticket sales close Aug. 15.

Cap'n Bob, Banana Band bring island sounds

Fox Point - The Fox Point Foundation and Cornerstone Bank are teaming up to bring the village its first free outdoor concert at Longacre Pavilion, 7343 N. Longacre Road, from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 17. Bring a picnic supper, chairs or a blanket and enjoy the performance of Cap'n Bob and the Banana Band. In case of rain, the performance will shift to Stormonth School. Journey House announces golf outing

Mequon - The 7th Annual Journey House Golf Outing will take place at the Mequon Country Club, 12400 N. Ville Du Parc Drive, at 11 a.m. Aug. 23. Teams of foursomes, individual golfers and sponsors are now being recruited.

The tournament format is a four person scramble with special on-course events, including a hole-in-one contest and place prizes awarded. The fee of $800 per foursome or $200 per individual will cover golf, lunch and dinner as well as use of the driving range.

Hole sponsorships are available for $400 and include recognition on event signage and in printed materials. The event draws about 150 participants from the greater Milwaukee area.

The Garden Room is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
