Steffen Middle School honoring WWII veteran
Mequon — Students at Steffen Middle School will celebrate Veterans Day early this year with a showing of the documentary "Honor Flight," followed by a question and answer session with World War II veteran Joe Demler.
Demler, a Port Washington native and WWII prisoner-of-war, was nicknamed the "Human Skeleton" after a Life magazine photographer captured a famous photo of him weighing less than 70 pounds while in a Nazi prison camp.
As an ambassador of the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight program, Demler has helped raise thousands of dollars to help fly fellow WWII veterans to the war memorial in Washington, D.C.
The student council-sponsored assembly takes place from 9-11 a.m. Nov. 7.
Papa John's got too big
a slice from assessor
Brown Deer — Due to a clerical error by the village assessor, Brown Deer will have to pay back pizzeria Papa John's for a property value over-assessment.
Village Manager Michael Hall said Papa John's paid their tax bill without catching the error but later approached the village and complained about the assessment error. After closed-session negotiations with the village attorney on Monday, the Village Board agreed to pay the difference back.
Brown Deer will pay back Papa John's on behalf of all area taxing jurisdictions and go to the state Department of Revenue to be repaid for the other jurisdictions' shares, Hall said.
"It's a lot of red tape that takes a long time," Hall said. "It's kind of both parties' fault."
Shorewood school tax rate flat for 2013-14
Shorewood — Though the school district will levy more for the current school year than it did last year, the district tax rate is expected to stay flat because of an increase in district property values.
Based on the levy approved by the School Board on Tuesday, the levy will increase by about $388,000, but the tax rate will remain at $13.88 per $1,000 of assessed property value, the same as last year, Interim Business Manager Mike Garty said.
Shorewood's equalized property value increased by about $28 million, or about 2 percent, since last year, Garty said.
For a resident with a $300,000 home, the tax rate means a school tax bill of $4,164.
Governor's aid flattens Brown Deer's levy
Brown Deer — As a result of Gov. Scott Walker's increase to school state aid, the Brown Deer School District will not increase its tax levy for the 2013-14 school year.
Before the aid was approved by the governor, the district had planned to increase the levy by 0.38 percent, or the amount needed to continue to pay off debt on the campus overhaul approved by voters in a fall 2011 referendum.
With the approximately $103,000 in new aid, the district can keep its levy flat.
However, due to decreasing property values throughout the village, the tax rate will increase 60 cents, or about 4.2 percent, to $15.05 per $1,000 of assessed property value. For the average district resident with a home valued at $136,654, that means a district tax bill of $2,056, about $82 more than last year.
Shorewood to hold vision meeting
Shorewood — Elected officials want input from residents on the long-term vision for the village.
On Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Shorewood Intermediate School commons area, village staff and members of the Village Board will be on hand to discuss Shorewood's 2025 Vision Plan.
According to Special Projects Manager Peter Cahill, the vision plan "helps put together a picture of what we want the community to look like in 2025 and how we can get there."
Glendale — The Nicolet School Board on Monday approved an energy savings performance contract with Indianapolis, Ind.-based Performance Services. The company will administer energy saving projects throughout the district like lighting and fixtures replacements, door and window replacements, and lighting schedules.
The board borrowed approximately $4 million earlier this year to fund the projects and will spend about $335,000 in the 2013-14 on debt payments.
According to a resolution passed by the board, the projects are expected to pay for themselves through energy savings in about nine years.
Former gas station
could be blight
Brown Deer — After closed door considerations, the Community Development Authority held over until late November a decision to declare the vacant property at 51st Street and Brown Deer Road a blight.
The former Citgo gas station has changed hands several times in the last decade, in 2007 becoming the focus of a developer who sought to renovate the property but abandoned the project after falling on hard times.
The property has since been bought by the owner of the BP gas station across the street and remained undeveloped.
A blight designation could be the first step in having the vacant building condemned, said Development Director Nate Piotrowski.
