North Shore NOW wins three awards in state contest
North Shore NOW won three awards - including two for first place - in the 2009 Wisconsin Newspaper Association's Better Newspaper Contest.
Reporter Jane Ford-Stewart took a first in environmental reporting for her story about a Whitefish Bay family that has gone "green" in just about every aspect of their lives.
The story had "lots of useful information in digestible bits," the judges said. "The flow of storytelling is smooth and the story has nice readability to it."
Designer Scott Rieser also earned a first-place award for sports design for his work on NOW's coverage of Homestead High School's state football championship in 2008.
"Your entry was far and away the best," the judges said. "Excellent organization, hierarchy and refinement."
Sports reporters Steven L. Tietz and David Cotey placed third for sports news with their coverage of the Homestead football championship, which the judges described as "excellent writing."
Those awards were among the 19 presented to NOW Newspapers, which publishes seven other suburban newspapers in metro Milwaukee, at the WNA's annual conference this month in Middleton. The NOW Newspapers publications and Web sites received 10 first-place awards.
Brookfield-Elm Grove NOW took home a total of seven awards, including first-place awards in sports column, creative use of multimedia and best special Web project.
Wauwatosa NOW received five awards and took first in overall page design, best sports feature and general Web excellence.
OakCreekNOW.com took a first for continuing Web coverage for its online reporting of the city's mayoral race.
Greenfield-West Allis NOW also received a first-place award for best photo essay.
