Summer Sounds at Hubbard Park Features Diverse Musical Talent
One of Milwaukee’s best-kept secrets is beautiful Hubbard Park along the Milwaukee River in Shorewood, the site of an expanded, free outdoor concert series this summer. Kicking off on Thursday evening, June 30, Summer Sounds will run for seven consecutive Thursday nights through August 11 at Hubbard Park. Enjoy a wonderful summer evening under the stars listening to some of today’s hottest musical talent, many of whom have roots in Shorewood.
Summer Sounds will feature a variety of musical sounds, including jazz, contemporary rock, blues, bossanova swing, funk and traditional Irish/bluegrass, with concerts starting each Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. (the park opens at 5 p.m.). Bring a lawn chair or blanket – picnic food and assorted beverages will be for sale from Hubbard Park Lodge, including beer and wine. (No carry-in alcohol is allowed; please make your purchase in the park from the Lodge, now featuring Big Bay Brewing products).
The full line up of shows features:
June 30: Streetlife with Warren Wiegratz
A unique blend of R & B, smooth jazz and contemporary styles, combining superb musicianship with an exciting stage presence. Recognized countless times with industry music awards, Streetlife is the house band for the Milwaukee Bucks.
July 7: Darele Bisquerra & Trio de Janeiro
Explore the shore with Trio de Janeiro strolling the threshold between sand and sea. Be it BossaNova, Vintage Latin, CafeJazz, IslandSol or a splash of Swing, the music exudes a soothing energy.
July 14: Jackie Brown & the Boys
Enjoy a unique mix of superb instrumentation topped off by a female vocalist who can belt out Janis Joplin effortlessly – and a WAMI award-winning flute player that can lay down some Tull as if he wrote it. Jackie Brown and the Boys offers a variety of classic and alternative rock favorites, and a little bit of country – plus an interesting mix of original numbers.
July 21: Tweed Funk
Recently nominated for Wisconsin Area Music Industry’s (WAMI) New Artist of the Year award, Tweed Funk surprises with great vocals and the classic soul/blues of the ’60s and ’70s. Enjoy blues, funk, soul, gospel and R & B at its best.
July 28: Peter Vaguely with Coolsville
Blues/jazz stylings that are a decidedly fresh interpretation of the cool cabaret tunes of the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s with a modern flair. Then add a dash of R & B and a sprinkle of New Orleans. These men wear hats!
August 4: MRS. FUN
Complex and sophisticated, MRS. FUN is a jazz/funk duo composed of keyboard player Connie Grauer and drummer Kim Zick. They have played with Robin Pluer, the Indigo Girls, k.d. lang and many more. Enjoy their electric mix of keyboards and drums in a non-stop action show.
August 11: The Gleasons
Fiddles, flutes, guitars, percussion and rich harmonies define the sound where Celtic and Pop music meet – that sound is The Gleasons. Take a musical journey that will leave you smiling and stomping your feet with this band that combines traditional Irish, bluegrass, Americana, a hint of Latin, rock and American pop.
Summer Sounds is produced by the Village of Shorewood Marketing Program and presented by PNC Bank and Hubbard Park Lodge. Additional sponsors include the Shorewood Foundation, Shorewood Men’s Club, Big Bay Brewing Company and Culver’s of Shorewood. Hubbard Park is located off of Morris Blvd., just 4 blocks south of Capitol Dr. The park is handicapped accessible at the lower level turnaround.
